Bangladesh will leave Brisbane with one point from their Group A match against Australia after incessant rain forced an total abandonment at the Gabba. The game was officially called off at 4.42 pm, a little more than two hours after the scheduled start.

At around 2:30 pm, the ground staff braved the weather to put up advertising on the field but rain grew heavier in ten minutes. The two teams arrived at the Gabba later in the afternoon only to mill around the dressing room.

The rain in Brisbane hardly relented following Cyclone Marcia’s landfall on Friday morning. Australia’s venue with most washouts lost its only chance to host the home side in the World Cup.

The result left Bangladesh on three points in Group A, behind New Zealand and Australia (on net run-rate) and ahead of sides like England and Sri Lanka, who were yet to earn points.

Bangladesh travel to Melbourne next to take on Sri Lanka on February 26. It will be their first match at one of Australia’s major venues, having only played in Canberra, Cairns and Darwin previously. Australia’s wait for on-field action – after their big opening-day win against England – is now extended by another week. They travel to Auckland to play New Zealand on February 28.
