West Indies opener Chris Gayle hit a scintillating double century against Zimbabwe today at Manuka Oval in Canberra, Australia. The swashbuckling batsman hit 215 runs off only 147 balls in Pool B Match 15 in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. Gayle, not only became the first batsman to score a double century in World Cup, but also broke the record of fastest double century, previously held by Virender Sehwag of India.

Even though it was not a typical Gayle innings to start with, but the Jamaican accelerated after scoring hundred. In the end it turned out to be a Gayle-storm at Manuka Oval with fours and sixes being hit all around the park (now we can say a typical Gayle show). Eventually, West Indies went on to win the match, but hang on this not all that will go down in the record books.

There is an interesting piece of similarity attached between the first ODI double century scored by Sachin Tendulkar and the first World Cup double century scored by Gayle. And that is the date– 24th February! The date is etched in the memory of  a cricket buff, as five years earlier in 2010, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar  hit a double century against the mighty South Africans.

Since the first double hundred scored by Tendulkar in 2010, three other double-hundreds have been scored. All three were hit by Indian batsman, with two solely by Rohit Sharma. We take a look at some of the highlights of both the double centuries hit five years apart.

There is no parameter to compare Chris Gayle and Sachin Tendulkar’s century as both batsmen hail from different eras’ and have a different playing style altogether. But it is February 24 that connects both the double hundreds. If Tendulkar became the first batsman on the planet to hit a double century in an ODI match in 2010; Gayle bettered it by hitting the first World Cup double hundred, five years later.
